Rev. Severino is “thinking about the widows and orphans”

“My deep concern is for this female group of people who have been left completely traumatized and helpless”

BACKGROUND

In May 2002, a militia group (known as the LRA) consisting of about ten thousand troops, came out of Torit town in Eastern Equatoria (Sudan) and went southward to Katire post. They rounded up people in four villages around Katire, collected all the men and took them outside the village and massacred them.

One witness reported, “They cut all of them into pieces.” Then they called out the women who carried babies on their backs and asked each one to show the sex of her baby. If they found the baby was a boy, they cut him into pieces right in front of the mother. If she cried or screamed, she was also put to death. The total of those killed in that incident was 600. Their properties were also looted. This group of women and girls moved to the town of Ikotos seeking safety, food, clothes, and blankets.

Severino writes: “My deep concern is for this female group of people who have been left completely traumatized and helpless. When I visited them on July 18, 2002, I was totally affected by their stories. Many of them just narrated what happened to their husbands and male children with tears. I gave them this message: ‘He will remove all of their sorrows, and there will be no more death or sorrow or crying or pain. For the Old World and its evils are gone forever’ (Revelation 21:4). It was very hard for them to comprehend such hope…These people need prayers, counseling, school for their female children — at least to occupy their minds not to think much about their fathers, sons, and lost brothers who used to be in their company. Also they need material help such as food, clothes, and blankets.”
